Forthing: T5 EVO and Yacht

The T5 EVO is the SUV that relaunched Forthing with a new badge. I wrote the design principles for it, sensual surfaces organised by precise lines, and led the exterior design. Sales began in March 2021.

For the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show we built a show car on the T5 EVO. I defined the concept and led its execution.

We had just finished the T5 EVO, the SUV that relaunched Forthing with a new badge and a new design language. The MPV line came next. It had to carry that language over and reach younger families who did not want a van.

Two images guided the work: the single stroke of a calligraphy brush and the tension of a drawn bow. The brush stroke became the front graphic, which spreads outward and ends in a splash at the lamp. The bow became the body side, which tightens toward the rear.

Sketch, CAD, full-size clay and A-class surfaces were developed in the Liuzhou studio. The lines were taped and re-cut on the clay until each stroke held its tension and read as one continuous line from every viewpoint, without a wobble.

Two proposals went to the GW1 decision event, where the programme team and executives voted. The main theme won all three views: front, side and rear.

Shown as a concept at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show. On sale in China from April 2022 as the Forthing Yacht, and exported as the Forthing U-Tour, including to Italy and Estonia.
